Mara Group Founder Ashish Thakkar is Africa’s youngest billionaire with his Mara group spanning over 20 countries in Africa. The Ugandan tycoon started his first business in 1996 at the age of 15 with a $5000 loan moving on to build his vast business empire from scratch. He recently spoke to CNN’s Marketplace Africa about African innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration. He had this to say to young entrepreneurs just starting out.
‘Entrepreneurship is a journey, it’s not a destination. There are going to be so many challenges, you are going to get knocked down so many times, but you’ve got to get up, dust yourself off and get back to it. The persistence, the passion, and staying on course are very crucial. You’ll be tempted to cut corners, you’ll be tempted to do things that get you there quicker, but it never lasts. People say the youth are the leaders of tomorrow –we’re not. We’re the leaders of today, but it’s our responsibility to take the seat at the table.’
Ashish Thakkar has served as a great inspiration in our continent both to entrepreneurs and the African society at large. I hope you feel inspired and ready to revitalize your energy to see your business become a success.
