It all started with a simple poem, Choices we make. Quite unbelievable, no? But that remains the true account of the birth of the publication in young John Brian Oyaro’s innovative mind. He divulges that it was after his recitation to the class that his lecturer pushed him to do more poetry, as he was evidently good at it. This he would seriously take into consideration, and the rest, as they say, really is history.
He would begin by interviewing students, both within and without Daystar as well as lecturers. Furthermore, being a man with ambition, he sought after the renowned Johnson Mwakazi, hoping to have a sit down with him as well. Unfortunately, as fate would have it, Mwakazi would not take the invitation to serious consideration. However, this did not deter JB-as he is known among his peers. He asserts this by stating that, “How you choose to handle failure will determine your successes that will follow.” He put an emphasis on prayer, saying that constant prayer and dedication of plans to God is mainly what has brought the achievements he is proud of.
The prayers would pay off finally when the Signature Journal hosted the famous Elani music group- and even more so that they were at the peak of their career. Mr. Mwakazi happened to be one of the invited guests, he was able to see the determination of the team. JB adds that working with Elani also taught them as a team the value of patience, they have really learnt how to be persistent in their patience. This would keep them strong even when some individuals in the team pulled out for their various reasons.
You can never copy intention. That statement he makes with relation to a few individuals who had started a rather sorry attempt at replication of the magazine. He also confesses that he was not afraid and neither did he feel threatened, because he knew full well what his intentions were, and what he needed to get where he was going. To him it was never about the money, but the impact that the publication will have in people’s lives; the percentage that will be influenced into making good and lasting choices in their lives. That solely would provide fulfillment to the values on which the publication is instituted upon.
Being in the student government as well as the brains behind the publication has been quite a challenge for JB, but one nonetheless that he is proving to be well capable of handling. He is also quick to add that the presence of 3 of his team members in the student government serving under him is no small matter, but an achievement to be proud of. He sees it as an opportunity for growth in their leadership, leaving a positive impact on the publication as well. This will be highly advantageous, since he looks up to his team when it comes to decision making about the publication. Consultation, he insists, is key to growth as well as improvement of relations among colleagues and their leaders in an organization.
For an individual who looks up to Steve Jobs, it does not come as much of a surprise when JB mentions his other features of the organization; the video journal which is consistent of the Grand Talk, the foundation set up to help the needy and finally the high school edition, which he says is really picking up. He looks forward to when the publication will be an even bigger influence, probably on a societal scale. A totally achievable vision, considering of course the persistence, patience and dedication evident in the work done. Currently, the publication is awaiting a restructure that is set to happen this month, we here at Thefounder wishes the Signature Journal good luck and Godspeed.
